Can Dogs Eat Cheese?
Verdict
Feed with caution
Why it is risky
Cheese is high in fat and calories, and many dogs are somewhat lactose intolerant. Hard, mature cheeses like cheddar have less lactose than soft cheeses. Blue cheese contains roquefortine C which is toxic to dogs — avoid completely. Skip cheese for dogs with pancreatitis history, obesity, or dairy intolerance.
Safe portion
A pea-sized cube for small dogs, up to a 1cm cube for large dogs, as an occasional training reward.
Symptoms to watch for
Blue cheese ingestion: vomiting, tremors, high temperature, seizures — seek urgent vet care.
Always consult your vet. If your dog has eaten something you're worried about — or shows any unusual symptoms — call your veterinarian or a pet poison helpline immediately. This page is editorial guidance, not emergency advice for an individual animal.
