Why it is risky
Nutmeg contains myristicin, which can affect the nervous system in large doses. The small amount used in baking is very unlikely to cause serious poisoning, though it may upset the stomach. The risk comes from dogs getting into a jar of ground nutmeg or whole nutmegs.
Symptoms to watch for
After large amounts: disorientation, a fast heart rate, high blood pressure, tummy pain and, rarely, seizures. Signs can last up to two days. Call your vet if your dog eats ground nutmeg from the jar or whole nutmegs.
