Why it is toxic
Chives, like onions, garlic and leeks, contain compounds that damage red blood cells and can cause anaemia. Dried chives and chive-flavoured foods such as dips, cream cheese and crisps are easy to overlook.
Symptoms to watch for
Signs can take a few days to appear: weakness, pale gums, fast breathing, reduced appetite and dark urine. Vomiting may happen sooner. Contact your vet if your dog has eaten chives.
