Why it is toxic
The mincemeat filling is mostly dried vine fruit, which can cause sudden kidney failure in dogs. The pastry is also high in fat. Because the effect is unpredictable, even one mince pie should be taken seriously.
Symptoms to watch for
Vomiting or diarrhoea, followed over the next one to three days by lethargy, loss of appetite and reduced urination. Contact your vet straight away.
