Butternut Box Feeding Guide
An independent, editorial look at feeding Butternut Box — portions, calorie targets, transitions, and how the per-day cost stacks up against kibble. We are not affiliated with Butternut Box.
How Butternut Box portions work
Butternut Box is a fresh, gently-cooked food delivered frozen. When you sign up you enter your dog's weight, age, breed, body condition and activity level, and their system produces a daily kcal target and matching pouch size. Because pouches are pre-portioned, there is no scale to worry about — but the trade-off is that if your dog gains or loses weight you need to update the profile so the pouches change with them.
Rough calorie targets (adult maintenance)
| Weight | kcal/day (moderate activity) | Typical Butternut daily grams* |
|---|---|---|
| 5 kg | ~280 kcal | ~230 g |
| 10 kg | ~500 kcal | ~400 g |
| 20 kg | ~850 kcal | ~680 g |
| 30 kg | ~1150 kcal | ~920 g |
*Approximate, assuming ~125 kcal / 100g. Real recipes vary from ~110–140 kcal / 100g; always use the pouch label.
Cost-per-day check
Fresh food is more expensive per calorie than kibble. To compare honestly:
For a healthy 10 kg adult you can then compare that number against the cost per day of your current kibble (kibble kcal/kg × grams needed ÷ 1000 × price per kg). Fresh food usually costs 2–4× more per day than mid-range kibble — decide whether the quality bump is worth it for your household.
Transitioning to Butternut Box
- Days 1–3: 25% Butternut, 75% previous food.
- Days 4–6: 50/50.
- Days 7–9: 75% Butternut, 25% previous.
- Day 10: 100% Butternut.
Slow down and hold each step for longer if your dog has a sensitive stomach or a history of pancreatitis.
