Pumpkin for Dogs: The Superfood That Fixes Stools

Pumpkin is a fibre powerhouse. It's one of the few remedies that helps both diarrhoea and constipation — because it regulates water content in the stool.

Educational content — not veterinary advice

Information on this page is general guidance only and does not replace diagnosis or treatment by a licensed veterinarian. Always work with your vet before making condition-related dietary changes.

Why it works

  • Soluble fibre absorbs excess water in diarrhoea, forming a gel.
  • Insoluble fibre adds bulk and moisture to hard stools in constipation.
  • Prebiotic effect — feeds beneficial bacteria in the colon.

How much to give

  • Small dogs (< 10 kg): 1 teaspoon daily.
  • Medium dogs (10–25 kg): 1 tablespoon daily.
  • Large dogs (> 25 kg): 2 tablespoons daily.

Critical warning

Use 100% pure canned pumpkin, never pumpkin pie filling. Pie filling contains sugar and spices including nutmeg, which is toxic to dogs.

Fresh alternative

Steam and mash fresh pumpkin, seeds and skin removed. Freezes well in ice-cube trays for hot days.
