Peas provide plant protein, fibre, vitamin K, B-vitamins and manganese, which is why they turn up in many complete dog foods. They are safe fresh, frozen, thawed or steamed. Avoid tinned peas — the added salt is unnecessary for dogs. Dogs with kidney disease should avoid high-purine foods like peas; check with your vet.

A small handful of plain peas mixed into the bowl for a medium dog, less for small dogs.
