How to Actually Read a Dog Food Label
Past the marketing claims, where the truth lives: ingredient ordering, AAFCO statements, and what the guaranteed analysis really tells you.

Pre-launch placeholder content — bylines and review credentials will be assigned to named veterinarians before public launch. Educational only; not veterinary advice for an individual animal.
Dog food packaging is designed to sell, not inform. Three sections do most of the heavy lifting: the AAFCO statement, the ingredient list, and the guaranteed analysis.
The AAFCO statement
Look for 'complete and balanced for [life stage]' along with how that was determined — formulation or feeding trials. Feeding trials are generally regarded as the stronger evidence.
Ingredient ordering
Ingredients are listed by pre-cooking weight. A 'chicken' first ingredient is mostly water; 'chicken meal' is dehydrated and concentrated.
