Fats & Omegas for Dogs

The most concentrated source of energy in your dog's bowl — and the easiest macronutrient to mismanage.

Fats deliver more than twice the calories per gram of protein or carbs and supply the essential fatty acids dogs cannot synthesise themselves. Linoleic acid (an omega-6) and alpha-linolenic acid (an omega-3) must come from the diet.

Omega-3 vs omega-6

Both are essential, but the modern domestic diet skews heavily omega-6, which is pro-inflammatory in excess. Omega-3s — particularly EPA and DHA from cold-water fish — are anti-inflammatory and support brain, joint, and skin health.

Healthy sources

  • Fish oil (sardine, anchovy, salmon) — best EPA/DHA source.
  • Whole oily fish — sardines, mackerel.
  • Flaxseed oil — plant-based ALA (lower bioavailability).
  • Chicken and beef fat in measured quantities.

Fats to avoid

  • Fried foods, gravy, and bacon grease.
  • Hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils.
  • Rancid oils — store fish oils refrigerated and check the smell.
